Navy Blockade of Strait of Hormuz Confirmed — CENTCOM Begins Monday Operations

The United States military will begin a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz at 10 AM ET Monday morning, following the collapse of peace talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan. President Trump announced the move Sunday after Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner spent more than 21 hours at the negotiating table — only to watch Iran refuse to commit to abandoning its nuclear program.

CENTCOM confirmed the blockade targets vessels entering or departing Iranian ports specifically, while leaving the strait open to all other international shipping. It's a surgical move — cutting off Iran's revenue without shutting down global energy markets. Iran had been charging ships up to $2 million per transit since the war began six weeks ago. Trump called it "world extortion" and said anyone who paid will no longer have safe passage.

The Navy is also sweeping Iranian mines from the strait. Two U.S. destroyers entered the waterway Saturday — the first American warships to do so since the war began. The UK is sending minesweepers. Oil topped $100 a barrel Sunday and jumped another 8% on the blockade news. Iran's IRGC threatened to deal with military vessels "severely." The ceasefire now hangs by a thread.

The core sticking point: Iran's refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Vance said the U.S. needs "an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve one." Iran said no. Vance left a door open — calling the U.S. position its "final and best offer" — but Trump was blunt on Fox News: "It's going to be all or none." Monday's blockade makes that very clear.
